Poetry like you’ve never heard it before…
In collaboration with CAM Raleigh:
Culture At the Mic is a monthly showcase of talented local artists hosted by the Contemporary Art Museum of Downtown Raleigh. Our goal is to create an intimate and powerful environment where the focus is on the artists and creating an open dialogue with their audience.
Laugh, cry, and yell as these performances bring you into a world of heartfelt words, beautiful refrains, cutting rhymes and ultimately change your expectations around what poetry can be.
Imony Lowd – She performed in our very first show here at CAM and is blessedly back to enchant the air with her voice and words. Raleigh born and bred, Imani Horton, or ImonyLowd, is an inspiration. She has a gift for wordplay and depth and her poetry is intertwined with her passion for music; and boy can she sing some music. Her artistry has granted her access to poetic giants like the traveling performance group Poets in Autumn and she’s graced stages including The Legacy Chicago and Atlanta.
Humble Rodent – R. Craig Prince, locally known as Humble Rodent, is a poet and community builder that has been performing in the Raleigh area for the past half a decade. You may have seen him at local open mics, art museum features, poetry showcases of all kinds, and even in a play or two. His heartfelt and rhythmic style has been deeply shaped by Raleigh’s spoken word tradition and he is honored to help local poetry and local poets flourish.
Shavona Antoinette – Shavona Antoinette is a singer/songwriter from Raleigh, NC. She has an extensive musical background with roots in church, classical, jazz and soul. With diverse musical influences such as P.J Morton, Jasmine Sullivan, Lauryn Hill, Lianne La Havas, Tori Kelly, Esperanza Spalding, Moonchild and more; she is quite versatile. Shavona has frequented various corporate bands throughout the Carolinas. Having been featured and sampled on tracks with notable artists such as Black Thought, Khrysis, Gucci Mane and Big Sean, and Al Strong; having opened up for others such as Samhot; and having gone viral with the Lincoln University Concert Choir on several social media platforms, Shavona Antoinette is definitely an artist in her own right. She continues to deliver music that touches the soul and is currently working on releasing a project.
Holding all this artistry together, your show will be hosted by the one and only Krystal Da Muse, the hostest with the mostest, here to ensure a seamless and beautiful experience…
And all this made possible by CAM Raleigh, a non-collecting contemporary art museum that provides an environment for transformation through educational programs, cultural experiences, and bold, non-traditional exhibitions by living artists.
In creating experiences like this, CAM is working to transform the artistic landscape of Raleigh by investing in more platforms for local artists with a powerful message.
***Artist performances often involve mature themes and alcohol will be served***
