Poetry like you’ve never heard it before…
In collaboration with CAM Raleigh:
Culture At the Mic is a monthly showcase of talented local artists hosted by the Contemporary Art Museum of Downtown Raleigh. Our goal is to create an intimate and powerful environment where the focus is on the artists and creating an open dialogue with their audience.
Laugh, cry, and yell as these performances bring you into a world of heartfelt words, beautiful refrains, cutting rhymes and ultimately change your expectations around what poetry can be.
FlowEssence – Shaun Harris, known on stage as FlowEssence, is a poet/writer from Raleigh, NC. Well known locally for performing Hip Hop and Spoken Word at live events across the triangle, as well as publishing his first novel titled “Senseless Time,” his accolades include: publication in the book “Black Lives Have Always Mattered,” 5 Week Freestyle Friday champion on K97.5, and a feature in the critically acclaimed film “Black Kings.”
InTheBeginning Genesis – Genesis is a multifaceted artist renowned for her magnetic presence and extraordinary talent. With a diverse skill set encompassing poetry, singing, MCing, acting, dancing, and writing, she effortlessly captivates audiences across various artistic realms. Genesis has received numerous accolades, including the Community Spotlight “Woman of Wonder” award and is committed to making a positive impact with her work through organizations like Stand Up Speak Out.
Grandchamps – “Man of the People” aka lorD Mercy is a pure entertainer. From comedy, to poetry, to freestyles and music he does it all and he does it for the people. Born in Boston, Champs brings a different style and presence unlike anyone. When he hits the stage you never know what you’re going to get and sometimes neither does he…but no matter what you’re guaranteed to be entertained.
Spitsnasty – The fourth horseman of the hiphop-alypse, Spitsnasty AKA Tray Jones, is a true freestyler with lyricism to match his bassy and refreshing syncopated style. Inspired by legends like MF Doom, Tray is the kind of lighthearted spirit that channels something different and profound when he gets on the mic. His beats come quick so you better learn in and listen lest you miss it.
Holding all this artistry together, your show will be hosted by the one and only Krystal Da Muse, the hostest with the mostest, here to ensure a seamless and beautiful experience…
And all this made possible by CAM Raleigh, a non-collecting contemporary art museum that provides an environment for transformation through educational programs, cultural experiences, and bold, non-traditional exhibitions by living artists.
In creating experiences like this, CAM is working to transform the artistic landscape of Raleigh by investing in more platforms for local artists with a powerful message.
***Artist performances often involve mature themes and alcohol will be served***
