From Pulp to Perfection – Papermaking plus Letterpress double Workshop at Decree Company

In collaboration with Decree Company Letterpress and Sarah Ann Austin:
Visit Decree Company, an immaculately designed Downtown Raleigh Shop focused on finding inspiration in the ordinary. One of their specialties is creating gorgeous, hand-pressed stationary and they have invited everyone to come visit their space and learn the extraordinary combined art of papermaking and letterpressing for themselves.
Your guide for the evening will be Sarah Ann Austin, a talented fibers artist with some very unique skill sets. She can turn sunlight into images, sew gorgeous creations, and even up-cycle old wrapping paper into new and beautiful holiday cards. For this workshop, Sarah will be teaching you how to make your own handmade paper from the simple scratch of fibers and pulp.
All participants will get to have a hand in the paper-making process, from reducing plants down to their basic fibers all the way to pulling their completed sheets using traditional paper-making techniques and tools. They will also learn a basic knowledge of the chemistry and science behind sheet formation as well as some history of handmade paper making techniques passed down over generations.
While your paper warms up in Sarah’s portable dryers, you’ll be treated to a delicious lunch of hors d’oeuvres, dessert, and wine along with a tour of the Decree space and its one-of-a-kind furniture designed by the owner itself. Explore ink colors and engraved metal press cards right alongside their hundred year old antique letterpress machines that are put to use every single day!
Finally, your experience will conclude with the magical process of letterpressing. Using paper you just made yourself, you will get to mix your own custom ink colors, practice scoring your cards for the folding process, and then learn how to print all kinds of different types of designs on Decrees printing machines. Let your creativity run wild as you create unforgettable stationary that you can use for anything from holidays, to invitations, to simply reminding someone you care.
