Pea Shellin’ and Storytellin’ at Miry Branch Farm

August 26, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

$15.00

Touch, Taste, and Listen to the heritage of Johnston County…

In collaboration with Miry Branch Farm and Heritage Friends:

Spend a relaxing evening on a beautiful farm learning to hand shell delicious local peas while being regaled by some of the best local story tellers you can find!

You’ll join Dean Benson, owner and farmer, on a tour of the Miry Branch Branch Family Farm to see friendly goats and acres of verdant produce. Co-owned by Dean, Bailey Benson, and Brittany Baker, this family has been farming for 6 generations and grows everything from corn to collards!

After the tour, Dean will lead you to his family gathering spot to teach you the art of hand shelling fresh peas. Not only can it be a relaxing process, but you’ll get to take home every pea that you shell.

While you get into a rhythm, we’ll have local JoCo storytelling troupe Heritage Friends joining us to swap stories both true and fictional about the local area and its heritage. This incredible community group offers dinner and storytelling every third Thursday just for the sake of showing folks a good time and connecting with the writers and the roots of Johnston County. You will laugh and gasp as veteran storytellers Teresa McLamb Blackmon, Cherry L.F. Johnson, and Carol Best Joyner entertain you with tale after tale.

Before you know it, you’ll have a bucket full of peas and a head full of tales to take home with you! Come out for this one-of-a-kind local experience.
