Poetry like you’ve never heard it before…
In collaboration with CAM Raleigh:
People-First Poetry is a monthly showcase of talented local artists funded and hosted by the Contemporary Art Museum of Downtown Raleigh. Our goal is to create an intimate and powerful environment where the focus is on the artists and creating an open dialogue with their audience.
Laugh, cry, and yell as 3 performances bring you into a world of heartfelt words, beautiful refrains, cutting rhymes and ultimately change your expectations around what poetry can be.
This show’s artists will be…
Dennis Ma – Dennis is a first generation Chinese-American who has lived up and down the East Coast over his adult life. Over the past fifteen plus years poetry has always been his preferred vehicle for transforming trauma into beauty, but lately he’s widened his lens and poetic registers to better grapple with the full spectrum of being, in a John Keats meets Haruki Murakami after several beers sort of way.
When not grappling with the inherent and lovely contradictions of plain old existence, Dennis hangs out with his cat Gigi, bops around with his partner Jess, or gets irrationally moved by grown men playing contact sports.
Jen Jus Write – Jennifer, who has become well known by the name Jen Jus Write, is a passionate spoken word artist and advocate dedicated to using the power of words to inspire change and promote alternative thinking regarding healing trauma and mental health illnesses. With a captivating stage presence and a unique ability to weave together personal experiences, social commentary, and raw emotions, Jen’s spoken word performances leave a lasting impact on audiences that challenge societal norms and shed light on important issues.
As an advocate, She actively works to raise awareness about various causes, including, self awareness, mental health awareness, trauma bonds, and mental health within the youth communities.
CK – Celeste Kathleen is a spoken and performance poet with pieces that have reached over 2 million social media viewers collectively. Her debut book, The Floor of a Bathroom is a collection of poems that paint detailed pictures of childhood trauma, mental health, substance abuse, and domestic violence. The poems spend time naming the feelings and impacts these subjects have while working through what it means to get to the other side of them and heal.
Her poetry focuses on the idea that people, especially women are left to process some of life’s heaviest topics alone, on the floor of a bathroom, and that when we put words to those things and come together in our pain we can heal in a more thorough way.
Holding all this artistry together, your show will be hosted by the one and only Krystal Da Muse, the hostest with the mostest, here to ensure a seamless and beautiful experience..
And all this made possible by CAM Raleigh, a non-collecting contemporary art museum that provides an environment for transformation through educational programs, cultural experiences, and bold, non-traditional exhibitions by living artists. In creating experiences like this, CAM is working to transform the artistic landscape of Raleigh by investing in more platforms for local artists with a powerful message.
