People-First Poetry – Local Artist Showcase at CAM Raleigh

December 15, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

$9.00

Poetry like you’ve never heard it before…

In collaboration with CAM Raleigh:

People-First Poetry is a monthly showcase of talented local artists funded and hosted by the Contemporary Art Museum of Downtown Raleigh. Our goal is to create an intimate and powerful environment where the focus is on the artists and creating an open dialogue with their audience.

Laugh, cry, and yell as 3 performances bring you into a world of heartfelt words, beautiful refrains, cutting rhymes and ultimately change your expectations around what poetry can be.

This show’s artists will be…

Hausson Byrd – Hausson Byrd is a Poet, Organizer, Author, and Rapper from Raleigh, NC. He is a Graduate of NCA&T and is always trying his best to make his momma proud.

Starting out as a spoken word artist, he has been expanding his artistry to include poetry, music, emceeing, event curation, networking and community building. Hausson collaborates with other NC Artists to craft life changing experiences meant to enrich anyone who takes part in them. He follows the words of a plaque in his mothers house reading: “Never, Ever, Ever Give Up”, and so he never has and he never will. He hopes to inspire you to do the same.

Ina Cariño Originally from Baguio City in the Philippines, Ina Cariño is a 2022 Whiting Award winner for poetry. Their work appears in the American Poetry Review, the Margins, Guernica, Poetry Northwest, Poetry Magazine, the Paris Review Daily, Waxwing, New England Review, and elsewhere. She is a Kundiman fellow and is the winner of the 2021 Alice James Award for Feast, published by Alice James Books in March 2023.

In 2019, Ina founded a poetry reading series called Indigena Collective, a platform that, much like her own work, aims to center marginalized creatives in the NC community and beyond.

Pic’nCotten – This dynamic poetry duo is comprised of wife and husband performers King Cotten and ItsCatt! Their platform is exposing poetry through a marriage perspective. They perform separately at times but their true passion is healing through their experiences when they ignite on stage.

“While the right of passage into Pic’nCotten is free you will leave seeking a deeper understanding of self. Are you ready to cypher through your perception? To Pic the strings of your thoughts? To clear the fields of your stagnation? Take the Cotten out your ear…”

Finally, holding all this artistry together, your show will be hosted by the one and only Krystal Da Muse, the hostest with the mostest, here to ensure a seamless and beautiful experience..

And all this made possible by CAM Raleigh, a non-collecting contemporary art museum that provides an environment for transformation through educational programs, cultural experiences, and bold, non-traditional exhibitions by living artists. In creating experiences like this, CAM is working to transform the artistic landscape of Raleigh by investing in more platforms for local artists with a powerful message.
